"There is a strange paradox about writing. It is precisely this: there is no occupation in the universe that is lonelier, and at the same time depends more radically on a community, a commonwealth of other writers....As lonely as is the craft of writing, it is the most social of vocations."
- Walker Percy
About Us
The Virginia Writers Association (VWA) is a non-profit community of writers located in Alexandria, Virginia. We are a voluntary membership organization open to writers of all skill levels and to anyone with an interest in the literary arts.
VWA hosts events and readings; offers workshops to foster writing skills; promotes books by its members, and generally offers a supportive environment for writers.
VWA members enjoy significant savings on workshops and ticketed events. You do not need to be an author, published or otherwise, to join VWA and take advantage of these savings. Join today!
In partnership with other writers' organizations, VWA also works to promote events and workshops at other locations in Virginia and around the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
Future VWA plans include office space, offered at nominal rent, for authors needing "a room of their own" - a quiet, dedicated space in which to create.
VWA is a non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization funded by member dues, workshop fees and other earned income, and private donations.
